T006 – Adding BookWidgets to Brightspace (D2L) as an LTI 1.3 Tool

This guide explains how a Brightspace administrator can register BookWidgets as an LTI 1.3 (LTI Advantage) external tool using Dynamic Registration.

Before you begin:

- You need a Brightspace account with administrator rights, including access to Manage Extensibility and External Learning Tools.

Contact sales@bookwidgets.com to request an LTI Advantage Dynamic Registration link for your Brightspace instance.

Step 2: Open the LTI Advantage registration page

  1. Log in to Brightspace as an administrator.
  2. Click the Admin Tools (gear) icon and select Manage Extensibility.
  3. Open the LTI Advantage tab.
  1. Click Register Tool.
  2. Under How would you like to register your tool?, select Dynamic.
  3. In the Tool initiation registration endpoint field, paste the Dynamic Registration link you received from BookWidgets.
  4. Select Configure Deployment, so Brightspace automatically creates a deployment for BookWidgets.
  5. Click Register.
  6. The registration completes automatically, and BookWidgets appears in the list of registered LTI Advantage tools.

Note: The Dynamic Registration link can only be used once. After it has been consumed, it cannot be reused, even if registration was interrupted or failed. If you need to register again, contact sales@bookwidgets.com for a new link.

Step 4: Enable the tool

  1. On the LTI Advantage tab, click BookWidgets to open its registration.
  2. Make sure the tool is Enabled.
  3. Click Save and Close.

Step 5: Make the deployment available to your org units

  1. Click the Admin Tools (gear) icon and select External Learning Tools.
  2. Open the LTI Advantage tab and click the BookWidgets deployment.
  3. Make sure the deployment is Enabled.
  4. Under Security Settings, make sure Name, Email and Org Unit Information are selected, so BookWidgets can identify teachers, students and courses.
  5. Under Make tool available to, click Add Org Units, select your organization (or the specific org units that should have access), and choose This org unit and all its descendants.
  6. Click Save and Close.

Step 6: Test the integration

  1. Open a test course and go to Content.
  2. Open a module, click Existing Activities, and select BookWidgets.
  3. Pick or create a widget in BookWidgets and return to Brightspace.
  4. Open the activity as a teacher and as a test student to confirm that the launch works and that grades are passed back to the Brightspace grade book.

BookWidgets is now available to all teachers in the org units you selected.

Troubleshooting

- BookWidgets doesn't appear under Existing Activities: check that both the tool (Step 4) and the deployment (Step 5) are enabled, and that the course belongs to an org unit the deployment is shared with.

- BookWidgets can't identify the user or course: check the Security Settings of the deployment (Step 5).

- Registration failed or was interrupted: the link has already been used. Delete the incomplete registration, if one was created, and request a new link from sales@bookwidgets.com.
