U111 – How do I set up a BookWidgets test in Schoolyear?

If you use Schoolyear as a lockdown environment for taking tests or exams, this article describes best practices for setting up tests made with BookWidgets.

As an administrator

For a smooth way of working, it is a good idea if the administrator of the Schoolyear environment sets up exam templates for BookWidgets.

  1. Go to your Admin Console > Add-ons.
  2. Click Add and select a Whitelist tile.
  3. Provide a name, like for example "BookWidgets Exam".
  4. Unfold the menu Advanced URL patterns.
  5. For BookWidgets, add the following URLs:
  6. Hostname Pathname
    www.bookwidgets.com /a/exam/play/*
    www.bookwidgets.com /a/oauth2_return
  7. Repeat the process for all of the websites pertaining to the LMS that students may require for signing in:
  8. LMS Hostname Pathname
    Smartschool *.smartschool.be /account-verification
    *.smartschool.be /OAuth*
    Google https://accounts.google.* /*
    accounts.youtube.com /*
    Microsoft login.microsoftonline.com /*
  9. Save your template. It will now be available as a blueprint that teachers can use for setting up exams.

As a teacher

First, go to your account on www.bookwidgets.com and open the widget you'd like to have opened in Schoolyear.

  1. From within the widget editor, click Share > Exam Link.
  2. Create an exam link with the settings of your liking. Learn more about Exam Links here.
  3. When the link is available, either copy it and keep it on the clipboard, or keep it open in for example another browser window.

Next, go to the Schoolyear website.

  1. Click New exam.
  2. Click one of the BookWidgets exam templates as prepared by the Schoolyear administrator (see above).
  3. Click More settings and then the Websites tab.
  4. For extra security, disable the setting Allow all pages on website.
  5. Paste the BookWidgets Exam Link into the input field and click Add.
  6. Click the flag for the newly added URL to mark it as the start page.
  7. Finally, configure the remaining Schoolyear settings to your liking, and finalize setting up the exam.
  8. Done!

Before organizing the exam, prepare a model exam environment and test it as if you were a student first.
